Darren Liviniuk CPA, CA

Darren leads Deloitte’s Assurance practice in Alberta and serves provincial, municipal and indigenous governments across Western Canada. Darren focuses on work with finance leaders to develop the confidence needed in financial information needed to make great decisions. Darren is a regular speaker and facilitator on topics such as the future of corporate reporting, finance transformation and financial governance. He has led learning sessions for CPD on behalf of many organizations such as CPA Alberta.

Luke Wilson, MBA, CPA, CA

Luke is a Senior Manager in Deloitte’s Public Sector Assurance group. He serves all levels of governments, indigenous governments and non-profit organizations across Canada and most notably in Alberta. Luke works with public sector organizations to assist with any challenges they might be facing from advisory, value for money, and financial sustainability. He works with financial leaders in organization to capitalize on performance reporting to enable informed decision making. Luke has taught training courses on accounting standard updates, technical accounting, and new standard implementation to organizations across Canada.

June 1st | Ethics in the Public Sector

Part I: Ethics in the Public Sector – 120 Minutes

Covers the importance of ethics and reflection on ethical failures that have occurred over the past 20 years.

  • What is ethics, barriers to ethical behavior and tools to potentially overcome these barriers?
  • Review key ethical principles and the impact to personal and professional conduct;
  • Examine the importance of Code of Ethics (customized with a discussion of your client’s specific codes and policies)
    and the role of a robust compliance program;
  • Provide tools to identify and resolve ethical dilemmas in the workplace;
  • Target anti-fraud examination that looks into the connection between ethics and fraud and discussing the main
    motivations behind committing fraud, how to spot it and investigate it;
  • Examine mechanisms available to report suspected impropriety and discusses what protections are available

June 8th | Ethics in the Public Sector

Part 2: Ethics in the Public Sector – 120 Minutes

Course examines the importance of building an organizational culture driven by ethical values. Participants will develop an understanding of how psychological, organizational, and cultural forces influence ethical behavior. Topics may include:

  • Define culture, reflect on cultural risk and its connection to ethical behavior
  • Pillars of building and maintaining an ethical culture within organization
  • How to cultivate ethics through effective leadership and behavioral science
  • Ethical case studies of the 21st century that focus on the role of culture and profit on ethical behavior

Who should attend: Managers and Team Leads in the public sector
Timing: Two – 2-hour workshops, June 1st and June 8th, 2023

NOTE: Each part may be registered separately and each part earns a 2 hour CPA certificate upon completion.
