GFOA Alberta and Tantus Present:

Data Readiness Prior to an ERP Change
10 September 2025 | 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Brief Introduction:
Preparing your data for an ERP implementation is one of the most overlooked but most critical factors in determining project success. While organizations often focus on system features or vendor selection, it is data migration and conversion that often pose the greatest risk. In this session, Tantus  will draw on lessons learned from ERP readiness and implementation projects across Alberta’s municipal landscape to explore the concept of data readiness and provide practical, actionable guidance.
Participants will gain a clear understanding of the terminology, risks, and common pitfalls associated with data conversion, along with best practices for scoping, cleansing, and data ownership. Whether you are in the early planning stages of an ERP project or looking to avoid downstream issues, this session will equip you with the foundational knowledge needed to begin preparing your data today.
What You Will Learn:
  • Why Data Conversion is a Critical ERP Risk – Understand why poor planning and execution around data conversion is one of the top reasons ERP projects fail or stall.
  • The Myth of “Lift and Shift” – Learn why simply copying legacy data into a new system without transformation or validation is not a viable strategy.
  • Conversion vs. Migration: What’s the Difference? – Gain clarity on key terminology and the very different technical and resource implications of data migration versus data conversion.
  • Common Data Challenges – Explore the full range of data-related issues that municipalities often face when preparing for ERP transitions.
  • Scoping and Strategy Best Practices – Learn how to scope data work across two key dimensions—breadth (which modules/functions) and depth (how much data) – and the critical impact this has on timeline and effort.
  • Establishing Clear Roles and Responsibilities – Identify how to structure internal and external roles for data readiness, and how to clarify these responsibilities during procurement and internal planning.
  • How to Start Now — Before the ERP Project Begins – Learn actionable steps you can take today.

Participants can expect to:
  • Understand why data readiness is the number one risk factor in ERP projects—and how to mitigate it
  • Clarify terminology and expectations around data migration vs. conversion
  • Learn how to scope the right amount of data to convert, and why breadth and depth both matter
  • Identify practical readiness steps that can begin before ERP vendor engagement
